India does not allow/ recognize dual citizenship along with some other countries like China, Nepal, Iran, Austria, Netherlands, Japan, Ecuador, Peru, Singapore, Korea, Mexico, Malaysia, Fiji etc. which total around 40 countries. So, if you hold Indian Passport and accept the citizenship of another country, it means that you are forfeiting citizenship rights of India.

Once you acquire the citizenship of another country, you would have to apply for renunciation of the Indian passport. We need to get a renunciation certificate signed and stamped by going/applying to the Indian consulate closest to you. You would also need to apply for OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) passport to gain unrestricted access to enter India. Additionally, this gives permission to work and live in India for any amount of time you choose to stay for.

In this post, I will cover the details about the Renunciation Application, Fees and Process times.

Application

When you want to apply to renunciation certificate in USA, head to Cox and Kings website https://www.in.ckgs.us/renunciation/ to start the application process.

Once the renunciation application is completed, you should either be able to mail in all the forms to immigration center. Alternately, take an appointment with the immigration center closest to you.

You would have to take print outs of all the necessary forms along with the application form to submit the application.  Some of the checklist items are as follows:

• 2 Completed Renunciation forms
• Signed CKGS disclaimer form
• Additinal particulars form for Sanfrancisco, New York and Chicago
• Current Original Indian Passport and photocopy of first 3 pages and last 2 pages of passport
• Photo copy of USA passport information page and last to amendment pages
• Proof of name change if applicable, like marriage certificate
• Photo copy of Naturalisation Certificate
• Proof of address such as current state I’d, Drivers license or Utility bill
• Copy of signed Checklist

Fees

The application fee for renunciation is 175$USD and total taxes, mailing charges and additional service charges come to 217$ USD.

Process Time 

The processing time for renunciation certificate to come back in mail to you is in between 2 weeks to 4 weeks once the application is received by CKGS(Cox and Kings Global Service)center
